South Carolina Army National Guard Soldiers and civilian rescuers of the S.C. Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team (SC-HART) program perform rescue operations in support of the combined emergency-response effort in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey’s landfall, outskirt of Houston, Texas, August 31, 2017. The SC-HART program provides hoist rescue capabilities over water or mountainous terrain; each team consists of a UH-60 Black Hawk Army helicopter—or a LUH 72A Lakota–with a crew of four Soldiers and one-to-three civilian rescue-swimmers. It’s a joint program between the State Urban Search and Rescue Task Force (SC-TF1)–Office of the State Fire Marshal, S.C. Emergency Management Division–and the S.C. Army National Guard. South Carolina joined the multiple-state relief effort to assist the citizens impacted by the unprecedented flood in southeast Texas. (U.S. Army National Guard photo courtesy of SC-HART)
